The forest around me and ocean nearby nourish me and are the reason I am making art here on the coast. I draw, mostly the human figure, in charcoal and pastel and paint. This year I will be exhibiting small acrylic and watercolor landscape and nature paintings along with figure drawings. I experiment with abstract as well as realistic subject matter and style.

Drawing the figure presents the challenge of not only rendering the form believably but also conveying some sense of the spirit within. I’m drawn to the subject for its organic lines and forms and the myriad unique variations of individual bodies. For me the most satisfying works communicate a sense of mood, suggested by the model or pose, or the subjective interaction between artist and model as the work develops.

My realistic paintings are an endeavor to depict a sense of place and the beauty of my surroundings, or in the case of the abstracts, the energies within and about us.

I’m a native of New York state, have been drawing since I was a child, with time out for careers in graphic design and special education. I am happy to have found my way west to the beautiful north coast and to a community so supportive of the arts. My work has been exhibited across the country in the various places I lived as I worked my way west, and I participate in local arts exhibits and activities, including weekly figure drawing sessions at Gualala Arts. I will be showing my work with my husband, a potter, at our home in the forest- we look forward to your visit!
