Viking Pottery is functional, handmade, stoneware and porcelain pottery high-fired in a natural gas kiln to 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. No lead or toxic materials are used in the manufacture of this pottery. The potter’s wheel is used to hand throw each piece individually with a fullness of form and a sensitivity to function and durability for everyday use. When the clay dries to a leather hard state, the foot rims are trimmed on the bowls and vases and handles are attached to mugs and pitchers. Also, at this leather hard state, pieces that are assembled in various parts such as tea pots are put together. The pottery is dried and fired the first time to a low temperature, called a bisque firing. The next step is the application of Feldspar-based glazes developed by Harald Nordvold. The glazes are applied in many layers of color in a controlled, yet spontaneous, manner. These glazes have evolved from years of experimenting in a very controlled kiln firing atmosphere. The pottery is loaded into a large kiln and fired the second time in a reduction atmosphere. The second firing results in a permanent glaze surface and a vitrified finished product. Each piece is dishwasher, microwave and oven safe. Avoid sudden temperature changes and direct flame.
My passion for beautiful glazes has fueled my dedication to pottery for 30 years. The magical alchemy that gives life and spirit to my work is a result of carefully formulated glazes high fired in a kiln with a reduction atmosphere . My glazes are inspired by my knowledge of chemistry coupled with decades observing the rich heritage of glaze ware left by ancient cultures all over the world. My Darwinian approach of formulating and testing thousands of glazes has resulted in utilizing the surviving few that satisfy my quest to bring soul to the surface of my vessels and give them an inner glow. Each piece attests to the dedication of this lifelong journey. I have been a full time functional potter for over 30 and call my pottery Viking Pottery after my Norwegian heritage. My pottery is functional, handmade, stoneware and porcelain high-fired in a natural gas kiln to 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. No lead or toxic materials are used in the manufacture of this pottery. The potter’s wheel is used to hand-throw each piece individually with a fullness of form and a sensitivity to function and durability for everyday use. In the past few years I have started making Flower containers and serving platters off the potters wheel. The square and rectangle shapes give me interesting decorating opportunities.
Wood Ash Glazes – Ash from hard wood trees such as oak form the variegated texture and organic quality of these glazes. Wood ash contains soluble minerals [potassium and calcium] which form more than 50% of the content of this glaze. Wood ash glazes are very durable and non toxic. The glaze will vary with the type of wood and location the tree was harvested from. Wood ash glazes were first used in the Orient in the Shang period [1066-221] Kilns were fired with wood and the ash flowed through the kiln forming a glaze on the pots.
