Crafting one piece at a time, most often the material expresses what it wants to be —Each piece has a life of its own, sometimes ending up with an adornment of a wood burned piece of driftwood as a button. I source materials from unexpected places that inspire and bring character into each product I make. The flaws create the interest, the drama — the inside becomes the outside, and the complexities become the most interesting.
As a hat maker and leather artisan, I started working with the notion of using upcycled and sustainable materials after owning and operating a hat business for almost 20 years. I felt it my responsibility to create something new with what already exists. This has transformed my work towards “using what we have” and incorporating local sustainable materials into my art. “Branches on the forest floor become buttons; sheep wool becomes hats; hides become coveted clutches; and scrap leather destined for the landfill are transformed into whimsical pouches.” Connecting you with our Natural World through the items I make brings this natural beauty into our craft/our lives, enhancing our everyday experience. I look forward to showing you around my studio in the redwoods.
