My passion for beautiful glazes has fueled my dedication to pottery for 40 years. The magical alchemy that gives life and spirit to my work is a result of carefully formulated glazes high fired in a kiln with a reduction atmosphere. My glazes are inspired by my knowledge of chemistry coupled with decades observing the rich heritage of glaze ware left by ancient cultures all over the world.

My Darwinian approach of formulating and testing thousands of glazes has resulted in utilizing the surviving few that satisfy my quest to bring soul to the surface of my vessels and give them an inner glow. Each piece attests to the dedication of this lifelong journey. I have been a full time functional potter for over 40 years and call my pottery Viking Pottery after my Scandinavian heritage.

I was born in San Francisco, son of a Norwegian woodworker who immigrated to this country in 1936, and cherish memories of watching my father make furniture, build houses and more, even a pair of wooden skis. My mother was skilled with her hands also, as a dressmaker.

My first two years of college were spent studying science, but it was my first pottery class at Santa Rosa Junior College that fascinated me with the opportunity to combine my chemistry studies with the tradition of craftsmanship and working with my hands. I earned a BA from Sonoma State in 1972 and have taught classes in Santa Rosa and workshops at the Mendocino Art Center.

My work includes functional objects such as mugs, vases and bowls as well as decorative pieces, and is in private collections throughout the United States and beyond.
