Minimalist black and white photography and painting on washi paper.

Artist Arun Patel at work

I am interested in creating art at the intersection of painting and photography. I use the camera to compose minimalist images that evoke an emotion, often emphasizing a single element, and enjoy photographing in hazy or foggy atmospheric conditions. I am influenced by the principles of Asian landscape painting; creating depth with layers and mist, and the use of negative or empty space to balance the subject.

Currently, I am engaged in a long term project to portray an artistic and personal interpretation of ancient temples, forts, palaces and other structures across India and SE Asia. The sense of mystery, reverence and beauty imbued in these spaces will call attention to the civilizations who built them over millennia, hopefully evoking a sense of awe and wonder, and sparking our curiosity to learn more about them.

I also enjoy creating a unique and expressive print. To do this I use a variety of papers, and am especially drawn to handmade washi. I match each image to a particular paper, taking into account its texture, thickness, and reflective characteristics.

My book of photographs SHANTI: The Sea Ranch and Beyond, will be available for sale at the Open Studio. I am working on a new book, NAMASTE: to all the Trees, which will be available at a show at The Sea Ranch Lodge in Nov-Dec 2024.
