Jane Casner Mothersill
Drawing, painting, oil, pastel, watercolor, sculpture in terra cotta and stone
I am a realist painter and sculptor. I try to portray the beauty in the world around us, be it still life, landscape or figurative.
I would describe my art as “inspired realism” – interpretations and visual expression emanating from my interaction with nature, people, cultures and ideas. While unequivocally representational, I work to convey broader messages in its execution - seeking to elicit emotional and intellectual responses from the viewer. My landscape paintings are completed substantially on site while my still lives and figurative work are undertaken primarily in my studio.
After graduating from Georgetown University with a degree in humanities and international affairs, I studied painting, drawing and sculpture full time at the Art Students League of New York and, subsequently, received an MFA in Studio Art from the Graduate School of Figurative Art at the New York Academy. My development as a practicing artist has been inexorably tied to my life arc and experiences. I lived in the Philippines, Tokyo and Hong Kong for 20 years and maintained a home and studio in the Loire Valley in France for 33 years.
I have participated in over 40 exhibitions in the US, France and Asia, including 12 solo shows, and have received numerous awards for my work.
I reside full time at The Sea Ranch, CA where my studio is located.
