Ceramics and Oil Painting

My art is abstractions inspired coastline explorations. In my paint process I prepare canvas on a textured surface. It is applied randomly, yet plays a strong role in the art as there becomes a dialog between the hard edged textures and the fluid organic subjects which inspires the process. I work in oil, thin washes to slowly build up. In clay it is a similar process. It is a progression of building up and carving or taking away until I find balance in motion.

In paint or clay, it is a story without word. It is a metaphor using as inspiration small things like bits of sticks and stones, or larger events as earth against sea. I am looking at connections and pattern, erosion and refinement. Always there is the dance of “cause and effect”; the progression of building then taking away and finally balance in motion.

In the beginning of a painting, I prepare my canvas with a textured surface. It is applied randomly, yet plays a strong role in the art as there becomes a dialog between the textures and the subject which inspires the process. I work in oil, thin washes to slowly build up. In paint or clay it is also the progression of building and taking away. In clay, I will often start with a simply thrown vessel which I will carve away and add to, until I find that balance in motion.
